CA UPDATE: Bills Banning Powdered Alcohol Reach Governor's Desk
Alcohol Justice is pleased to report that the California State Legislature has unanimously passed both SB 819 (Huff, R-San Dimas), and AB 1554 (Irwin, D-Thousand Oaks). The bills were sent to Governor Brown's desk on August 26th for his signature. The legislation outlaws the manufacturing, distribution, sale, or use of powdered alcohol in California. The state will be joining 33 other U.S. states that have enacted similar bans or restrictions. Governor Brown has 30 days to sign this important legislation into law.
"Powdered alcohol" refers to alcohol prepared or sold in a powdered or crystalline form. When mixed with water or soda, it reconstitutes as an alcohol beverage. Such easy access is why Senator Chuck Schumer (D-New York) who stated the product could become "the Kool-Aid of teenage binge drinking" that leads "to increased hospitalizations and deaths" by underage drinkers.
NOW is the time to tell Governor Brown to sign this legislation banning powdered alcohol in California.
